What to do in Newton Abbot? That is a question many people ask whether you are on holiday or simply looking for something to do with the children during the school holidays. But they soon realise, there is always something to do in the historic town of Newton Abbot in Devon.

A visit to the town’s museum in St. Paul’s Road is the perfect place to start. Here you can find out what is happening locally and be inspired by some of the stories of famous Newtonians. The exhibition centre consists of a rich multi-media archive as well as historical artifacts, maps and easy-to-follow directions for the “Newton Abbot Town Trail” and the “Medieval & Tudor Newton Abbot” tour. If you fancy a day walking and discovering new things about the town you are visiting, then this is a great place to start. Market days allow you to view some of the many varied suppliers of local produce, enjoy coffee at over 20 eating establishments and then allow you enough time to visit the historic St. Leonard’s Tower in the town centre, thought to date back to 1220AD. A family day out at Newton Abbot’s Racecourse can be very exciting. Under 16’s can go free and there is a special family enclosure with great views across the course with bouncy castles and games for the children, which makes it a safe and family friendly environment to be in. Alternatively you can leave the younger children at the Sunflower Day nursery, a creche which opens on each raceday.

If you are looking to capture the family enjoying themselves, why not visit the professional photography studio of Keith Hathaway’s Creativephotos. There you can have a great time with the family having your portraits taken by the South West’s Award Winning Master Photographer. He has the ability to put everyone at ease, making it easier to create those special family moments, even if you do not like having your photograph taken! Images can be supplied on disk and you can view the whole photo shoot on the internet when you get back home. For more information visit www.creativephotos.biz

If you like outdoor pursuits, Decoy Country Park is a great fun day out for the whole family. There is plenty to do from riding the various cycling courses, fishing, windsurfing, canoeing to simply pulling up a rug and laying out the picnic hamper. This park has plenty on offer. The Teignbridge Rangers also run guided walks and public events like “It’s a bugs life” which run throughout the year but these need to be booked and a small fee is charged.

Tuckers Maltings still produces malt in the traditional way and is only one of four malthouses in England to do so. The guided tour shows how barley is turned into malt for local breweries using the old Victorian machinery. They last about an hour and includes a sample of real ale from the neighbouring Teignworthy Brewery. This is a tour where you can experience the touch, smell and taste of malt being created. It is a real feast for the senses.

So, there you have it, a small list of what to do in Newton Abbot to get you started on your journey of fun and enlightenment!
